The papers chiefly document Markus's teaching, research, and writing. Course materials consist of lecture notes from some of his classes at the University of Kansas and the University of Washington. Speeches and writings contain drafts and/or final versions of many of his writings. Conference materials are filed with the paper presented at the conference. Markus also kept a personal bibliography of his research work. About half of the bibliography cards were labeled by Markus to correspond to specific works.

Dr. Andrew Lawrence Markus was a professor of Japanese language and literature at the University of Washington with a special interest in the literature of the Late Edo period (1781-1867).
